Moana
📖 SUMMARY
A Polynesian chief's daughter answers the call of the ocean to restore the heart of an island goddess, partnering with the demigod Maui. Lush animation, a powerhouse soundtrack, and a heroine who leads with courage and conviction.
👶 AGE RECOMMENDATIONS
💛 HOW IT MADE ME FEEL
Once when Gramma Tala dances with the manta rays, and again when Moana sings "I am Moana" and reclaims her identity. Her heroism is rooted in *knowing who she is*, not in defeating someone. My kids walked away talking about courage and listening for that quiet voice inside.

CELEBRATION
The movie cheers loudest for the things I'm happy to cheer for too — courage that costs something, listening for the quiet voice inside you, and a heroine whose worth isn't built on a love story. It makes honoring your family and your elders look beautiful, makes repentance (Maui's whole arc) look heroic, and makes a young woman leading with conviction feel completely normal. The thing it makes feel normal that I'd flag — gods and demigods and ancestor spirits sharing the spiritual stage. It's not glamorized, just assumed, and that's the conversation worth having before bedtime.
CONSCIENCE
Yes. This one sits easily with me. The polytheistic backdrop is the only check in my spirit, and it's not the kind that makes me want to turn it off — it's the kind that makes me want to pause and talk with my kids about what makes our God different. Nothing about this film is asking me to bulldoze a conviction; it's just asking me to engage one out loud.
FRUIT
My kids walked away talking about courage and identity. The soundtrack lived in our car for weeks. I felt more grateful — for my own kids, for the truth that they have a voice inside them that points them somewhere better than themselves — and we had one of the easier post-movie conversations of the year. That's good fruit.
✨ POSITIVITY
- Strong, capable heroine without romance as her motivator
- Honors family, elders, and cultural heritage
- Themes of identity, calling, and courage
- Maui's arc shows real repentance and growth
⚠️ THINGS TO NOTE
- Polytheistic worldview — a goddess, demigods, ancestor spirits
- Good chance to discuss how this differs from your family's faith
- Tamatoa scene is intense for sensitive viewers
One more thing…
Moana is one of those rare films I'm happy to put on a hundred times. The soundtrack alone is worth it — my kids know every word. If your little ones are sensitive to dark scenes, watch the Tamatoa segment with the lights on (or skip it the first time). Pair it with a discussion about what the Bible says about courage and identity, and you've got a wonderful family night.

A Pixar eco-fable with the right heart — stewardship, repentance, family — but a too-scary Insect King overshadowed the good stuff for our kids.
A family-first Mario sequel with surprisingly real heart — Bowser of all people gets a redemption arc, the sisters get a reconciliation, and "your family is forever" earns its place as the movie's beating heart.
I almost wrote this off based on the title — and I would have missed one of the most accidentally Christian-themed animated movies of 2025
